Ferry to Bainbridge Island

Catching the Washington State Ferry (the world’s largest ferry system) to Bainbridge Island is a really delightful experience, and is highly recommended when visiting the city of Seattle. Departing from the downtown waterfront, the crossing takes about 35 minutes. One of the highlights is the wonderful view of the entire Seattle skyline as the vessel pulls away from dock. You’ll also see the impressive Mt. Rainier to the east and Bainbridge Island and the breathtaking snow capped Olympic Range to the west.

When you arrive, take a short stroll to one of the two main towns of Winslow, with its lovely boutiques, book shops, quaint cafes, restaurants and bakeries. There is a market at Winslow green every Saturday and wine tasting at Bainbridge’s Island Winery from Wednesday to Sunday. If you have a bicycle, the Bloedel Reserve, with its scenic trails is well worth a trip. Crossing the Agate Pass Bridge and the Kitsap Peninsula, leads you to the Port Madison Indian Reservation and the second main town of Suquamish. It is here that Chief Sealth, the man after which Seattle was named, is buried. There is a fantastic and very enlightening museum here, detailing the tribe’s history.
The island itself is 12 miles long and 4 miles wide, and so is quite manageable when visiting.
