Lake Union

Lake Union is a vibrant and bustling lake, home to many houseboating people, who have sacrificed their creature comforts for this very different lifestyle. It all started back in 1881 when a sawmill opened on the lake. Many of the people working there built their own makeshift shelters by tying logs together and putting tarpaper structures on top. This eventually led to hundreds of floating homes on Lake Union, and the trend has remained unchanged to this day. The present-day houses are however, luxury personified, and are very much sought after.

The lake is a pleasant mixture of marine activity, houseboat living and exclusive shopping and dining. Near the south end lies the very impressive 468-ton schooner, Wawona and the Centre for Wooden Boats.
A visit to the lake wouldn’t be complete without actually going out onto it. You can do this by renting sailboats, skiffs and kayaks at varying places around the lake. This is ideal for a lot of people who wish to explore at their own leisurely pace. If you aren’t too confident on the water, there are organized tours which tend to be reasonably priced and take you to all the points of interest. Salt water tends to build up a ferocious appetite, so, on your return to shore, be sure to sample some of the fantastic food at the many available top class eateries.
