Located towards the southwest of Boeing Field and King County
International Airport, the Museum of Flight is regarded as the
finest of its
kind on the whole West Coast. Part of the museum, known as The
Red Barn, is geared towards early aviation up to 1938, while
the stunning Great Gallery looks at flight from early mythology
right up to present day space technology. Hanging from the ceiling
are 20 full-sized aircraft, all facing in the same direction.
This display alone is worth the trip. Artifacts from the Apollo
space program including the Lunar Roving Vehicle, an Apollo command
module and even some lunar rocks, are on display at another exhibit.
The museum also houses a full-sized air traffic control tower.
Outside the museum lies the original Air Force One plane which
makes fascinating exploration. One of the highlights of the museum
for many people lies in the Tower exhibit. Here you can pilot
an imaginary flight from Denver to Seattle, participating in
everything, from checking the weather information and filing
a flight plan to landing the craft. This provides for a really
memorable experience, and is as close as most people will ever
get to flying an airplane.
The list of exhibitions above is only a fraction of the attractions
at the Museum of Flight, so make sure when you are in Seattle, not
to miss out on this superb place.
