Pike Place Market

Largely regarded as the heart and soul of Seattle, Pike Place Market acts like a magnet and attracts large crows of people from every walk of life. Established in 1907, the idea behind the market was to enable farmers to sell their produce directly to the consumer and thus cut out the middleman. It proved to be a roaring success until World War II, when it went into a period of decline like many other businesses. It is now classed and protected as a Historic District. It covers an impressive three block area, between Pike and Virginia and boasts fish sellers, flower stalls, tea shops, bakeries, herbalists, magic shops and much more. Live music, the aroma of flowers and freshly baked bread fills the air, just like old times. The information booths on 1st Avenue and Pike Place provide maps of the area and these can prove very helpful in ensuring you make the most of the day without missing any of the main attractions.

When exploring the market, make sure to check out the crafts area where magnificent, handmade items are sold and Pike Place Fish which has a fabulous range of seafood available. Watch out for the flying fish!
