Seattle, otherwise known as the Emerald City, is rated as one of
the most liveable cities in the US. Its diverse population, culturally
rich life, booming economy (it boasts some world famous massive
industries such as Boeing and Microsoft), combined with some breathtakingly
beautiful scenery, make the city a very popular place indeed. The
city inherited its name from the Native American chief Sealth.
Tribes like the Salish and the Duwamish, still live peacefully
in the surrounding hills to this day.
The deep, clear blue waters of Puget Sound, combined with the lush
greenery and the well known, laid back lifestyle, all make for a
truly unique city. Its society was traditionally reliant on commerce,
fishing and timber, but gradually inherited a name for computer software
and the aircraft industry. It contains a very youthful population,
all trying to live the good life, at the north-western corner of
America. It is this special atmosphere, rather than its vast wealth
of sights, that caused the city to emerge as the American city of
the 1990’s. To get a feel for this aura and vibe, as well as
a taste of the city’s colourful history, Pioneer Square downtown,
is as good a place as any to start your journey of discovery. Here
you can find some fantastic museums, including the more recently
completed Seattle Arts Museum. Just to the north of this lies the
infamous Space Needle which is certainly worth a gander. Although
Seattle is littered with places to go, sights to see like the awesome
scenery, perhaps the most important place to go when visiting the
city is the waterfront. Strolling along, you can sample the very
atmospheric Pike Place Market, as well as the various off-centre
neighbourhoods. This is what Seattle is all about. |
