San Juan Islands

San Juan Islands constitute over 700 islands, littering the sparkling, crystal clear, blue waters of Puget Sound. Between September and May, the tranquility and peacefulness on these islands is almost overwhelming. If this is your scene, then it is very hard to beat any of these wonderful islands. In the summer months, you can expect a lot more people and activity. Only one of the islands, namely San Juan Island, has a proper town, Friday Harbor. This particular island is easily the most popular, being more accessible and varied than any of the other islands. Don’t forget to take a camera with you, because it’s hard to beat the wildlife, flora and fauna here. The forest meadows are covered with wildflowers in spring while the wild orchards are overflowing with apples, pears and cherries. The surrounding waters are swelling with seals and the world’s largest concentration of the fabulous killer whales, orcas. The sky’s above boast America’s largest concentration of bald eagles. Historically, the Pig War, a British-American battle over possession, is explained via reconstructed fortresses at the southern and western edges of the island. There is a Whale Museum at Friday Harbor, but for the real thing, cross over to Lime Kiln Point State Park. Whale watching is best between May and August.
