Standing at 605 feet and rising 200 feet above Seattle’s highest
hill, the Space Needle is the city’s best known landmark. It
was built in 1962 for Seattle’s futuristic World’s Fair
and is visible over a vast area. It is a steel structure and weighs
3,700 tons and is anchored into its foundations using 72 massive
bolts, each being 32 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter. It
is claimed to be able to withstand winds of up to 150mph..The famous
Needle attracts millions of visitors yearly, and over one million
of these people take a ride in one of the three glass elevators to
the observation desk at 520 feet. There are helpful displays which
locate more than 60 important sites in the area. They also give a
general history of the Needle. You can find several free, very high
resolution telescopes in the building, which enable you to zoom in
and have a closer view of these sites. If you manage to reserve a
place at the SkyCity Restaurant on the 500th level, you automatically
get to go to the observation desk free of charge. This is very worth
while doing, as the views are out of this world. Amazingly, the restaurant
constantly rotates, completing a full turn in 47 minutes, thus providing
you with an unforgettable, panoramic view during the course of your
meal.
